Tradeskillmaster is an extremely powerful addon that I will be reviewing in the future. It is the most comprehensive auction house addon there is and it has the ability to list large numbers of items very quickly by using "groups".
The reason why it works this way is because of limitations of the vanilla API making it impossible to buy an auction from another page than the one last requested. TradeSkillMaster (TSM) is a modular addon suite designed to help both players new to the gold making scene as well as experienced auction house goblins streamline their gold-making processes including everything from crafting things to buying mats to snatch (deal finding) lists to creating and canceling auctions.
Of course it is possible for an addOn to apply arbitrary filters after the Blizzard query but only the Blizzard query will affect the number of pages to be scanned and thus the time it takes for a scan. Since the Vanilla API will only let you request a page every 4 seconds having no Blizzard query in your filter can lead to very long scan times. It's great that adding profession groups has now been added into TSM4. The only issue is that instead of adding each block of the profession as different groups(i.e. Vanilla, Burning Crusade, etc.) it adds all items into a single large group.
